Here are our first impressions halfway of our road trip in this country two times bigger than France:
Commercial or subsistence, South African agriculture is victim of his history.
With all the people we’ve met during our stay here, we face the heritage of the south african history dark period. As well as a social wrench which have been slowly resorbed for 20 years, the apartheid have left scars in the agricultural landscape. Indeed, its set up- and its premises - had for long penalized the black communities agriculture in favor of commercial farming mainly led by white people and highly subsidized at this time. These exploitations are estimated at 37 000 nowadays. They possess 80 % of the arable lands and provide 95% of the food. Although a restitution policy has been led in order to give back to the black communities their lands in order to repair segregationist property laws established at the beginning of the century, the major parts are still mainly owned by white farmers.
A road trip through south african landscapes
Consequently, we organized the Jugaaddict South Africa Tour (!), a 3 weeks road trip all around this amazing country! From Backpackers to Backpackers with our blue Chevrolet, we are constantly amazed by the spectacular landscapes such as the green and wooded mountains of Drakensberg or the mediterranean style of the Garden Coast.
About the research, the Agricultural Research Council at Pretoria, The Institute of Natural Ressources at Pietermariesburg as well as the Food Security Initiative at the Stellenboch University accepted to meet us. Until now, oyur stay allow us to have a better undestanding about the economic, agricultural and political issues in South Africa.
A top-down innovation mindset
Umgibe, an above ground farm in townships
As we can feel in our newletter, we didn't find the Jugaad spirit we had felt in India. However, we don't backing down. See you in the next newsletter for other innitiatives !
